Rwanda’s Juvenal Marizamunda calls on EAC forces to collaborate

Gako, Rwanda| On June 21, the 13th edition of the East African Community Armed Forces Field Training Exercise, codenamed ‘Ushirikiano Imara,’ concluded at the Rwanda Defence Force Military Academy in Gako.

The exercise was held under the theme “Strengthening Security Sector Integration and Harnessing Common Interests Consistent with EAC Regional Peace and Security.”

Members of the East African Community took part.

Juvenal Marizamunda, Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, presided over the exercise’s conclusion and praised the partner states and participants for their unity and dedication.

He stated that the participants worked together to address complex and multidimensional security challenges.

“Through collaboration and support as the EAC, can we address the 21st-Century security challenges which have proven to be exceptionally complex,” said Marizamunda.

He urged member states, the EAC Secretariat, and participants to assess the exercise’s outcomes and share what they had learned.

Veronica Mueni Nduva, Secretary General of the East African Community, stated that the exercise aimed to improve partner states’ capabilities in defending the community’s shared interests.

Gen Mubarakh Muganga, Chief Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force, praised sister forces from member states for their dedication and stated that the exercise strengthened the bonds between the participating states.

He said the exercise laid a solid foundation for the community to develop its own solutions to local problems.

During his inspection of the Uganda contingent, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, praised them for maintaining discipline and professionalism throughout the exercise.

Okiding also commended them for representing Uganda and upholding the UPDF’s integrity.
