Mbale |Uganda and Kenya defence forces (UPDF and KDF) have strengthened their defence collaboration to promote regional security.
This was made at a key meeting held at Mbale Resort Hotel in Eastern Uganda.
The Joint Defence Committee (JDC 5) met from January 13 to 15, 2025, purposely to strengthen the two countries’ military partnership.
In May 2024, JDC 4 was held in Nairobi and focused on pressing regional security concerns.
At JDC5, Major General Don Nabasa, the head of Uganda’s Joint Staff Policy and Strategy, emphasized the importance of strengthening joint military efforts to advance bilateral relations.
“This meeting marks another milestone in Uganda’s strong relationship with Kenya,” Maj Gen Nabasa stated.
“It demonstrates our armies’ excellent cooperation, and we are confident that the decisions reached will guide our strategic priorities.”
He expressed appreciation for Kenya’s commitment to fully implementing agreements, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing and addressing common security threats.
The Ugandan military officer applauded the Kenya Defence Forces for being proactive in combating livestock rustling and other crimes in Turkana and West Pokot counties.
Brig Samuel Kimani, Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy at Kenya Defence headquarters, emphasized the importance of military cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), which addresses common issues like cybercrime and terrorism.
Brig Kimani stated, “We are pleased to collaborate in advancing our shared security agenda to effectively respond to emerging threats.”
He praised Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s leadership in promoting military collaboration, such as joint training, exchange programs, and regional peacekeeping efforts.
Brigadier Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of Uganda’s 3rd Infantry Division, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to disarmament, maritime security on Lake Victoria, and combating transnational crime.
The meeting’s discussions focused on a variety of themes, including bilateral relations, disarmament operations, countering violent extremism, joint operations, training, and maritime security.
The outcomes are expected to improve security and long-term stability in both countries.
