Defence attachés advised to advance national interests abroad

Kampala | Lt Gen Sam Okiding has urged Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Defence Attachés and Advisors to be dedicated representatives of Uganda’s interests in their respective countries of assignment.

Lt Gen Okiding, the deputy CDF, was addressing the start of a three-day annual retreat for defense attachés and advisors at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya.

“You are the eyes of both the country and the UPDF. Your role is primarily one of representation, and you are expected to identify opportunities that will benefit Uganda, whether in trade, politics, or other areas,” he said.

Okiding emphasized the importance of aligning their work with Uganda’s foreign policy, and urged them to prioritize advancing the country’s economic and political goals.

To avoid potential conflicts, the deputy CDF advised attachés to remain professional when working with ambassadors who lead missions.

Additionally, he emphasized the significance of cultural awareness, pointing out that effective representation requires an understanding of the people and culture of their host countries.

Chief of Defense and Intelligence Maj Gen James Birungi reaffirmed the need for strong cooperation with regional organizations.

He cited organisation like the East African Community, lauding partnerships as essential to tackling common issues, a goal supported by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
