In a joint operation on September 8, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) said they rescued five women and children.
They were rescued from the terrorist organisation Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the ongoing “Operation Shujaa,” the forces successfully rescued the women and children following a confrontation with ADF terrorists at the River Asefu in North Kivu province.
Two women were injured in the firefight and were airlifted to Muhoti Military Barracks for specialised medical care. The malnourished children are also being treated by the UPDF medical team.
Major Bilal Katamba is the Public Information Officer for the UPDF Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa. He identified one of those rescued as Atukwase Katushabe Jamilah, 32, who was lured into rebel activities in 2008 from Nabweru Division, Wakiso District.
Jamilah was forced to marry multiple ADF commanders before being reunited with her 6-year-old daughter, Rahima, during the rescue.
The joint forces continue to pursue the scattered ADF terrorists who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Central Africa Province (ISCAP), an ISIS affiliate.
Dozens of women have been rescued from the ADF in recent months, and a number of them are undergoing rehabilitation.
