Abim | Obonyo Moses, 25, died in a tragic incident in Oyaro South, Kiru Town Council, Abim District.
Obonyo, also known as Pokba, tragically died after participating in a waragi drinking competition on an empty stomach.
According to eyewitnesses, Pokba took part in the competition on Monday night, consuming large quantities of waragi without food.
He was found unresponsive the next morning and did not regain consciousness.
Ocheng Joseph, LC1 chairperson of Oyaro South, expressed deep regret for the incident and stated that the community is shocked.
“It is very unfortunate, and we are still trying to come to terms with what happened,” he stated.
According to reports, an individual known as Odong supplied the waragi and encouraged others to take part in the drinking competition to test their limits.
This practice has raised concerns about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption, as well as the importance of responsible drinking habits.
As the community mourns the loss of a young life, security authorities have yet to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
Uganda is the leader in alcohol consumption in Africa, with each person found to be consuming 12.2 liters annually, according to World Health Organisation’s global status report on alcohol and health, 2018.
The nation’s consumption rate is higher than the Africa’s average of 6.8 liters, and the global average of 6.18 liters per person per year.
