Ituri |Under Operation Shujaa, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) collaborated with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) to successfully rescue 23 people from the clutches of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists.

The joint forces engaged with the ADF near the River Malibongo, north of Tokomeka in Ituri Province, resulting in the abductees’ rescue.

The rescued abductees, 16 females and 7 males, arrived at the UPDF tactical headquarters in Luna, Ituri Province, DRC, after being rescued from the jungles by joint mobile forces.

Thirteen severely malnourished minors, including three infants under the age of one, have been rescued.

“A joint medical team is providing emergency care in an effort to save their lives. The mothers are also receiving basic medical treatment in the field, and plans are underway to transfer them to a facility for more comprehensive care,” Major Bilal Katamba, the Public Information Officer for UPDF Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa, said.

Operation Shujaa, which is now in its 31st month, aims to decisively defeat the ADF, a terrorist organisation affiliated with Islamic State, Bilal said in a statement on Saturday.
