Police identify victims of Saturday’s fatal road crash on Lira-Soroti highway.

Summary: North Kyoga Regional PRO SP Patrick Jimmy Okema said on Sunday that a reckless fuso driver killed three people in an Abutadi road crash.

Lira | Following a fatal head-on collision in Abutadi along the Lira-Soroti highway on May 25, 2024, at around 8 p.m., three persons have been officially declared dead.

Two of the deceased are children of Dokolo district communications officer, Munsur Suwed, popular as “Blick” who is out of danger by Sunday morning.

The collision involved a white motor vehicle with registration number UBL 851Z (Costa) belonging to the Dokolo School of Nursing and a Fuso fighter truck with registration number UBA200J. It is white in colour.

The latter vehicle was carrying passengers returning from a traditional marriage.

According to police findings, as the Fuso approached Abutadi on the Lira-Soroti highway, the driver lost control and collided with the Costa, killing three people on the spot.

Several others suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment, although their identities have yet to be determined.

The road crash was confirmed by SP Okema, who also mentioned that the Division Traffic Officer of Lira City CPS and the DPC Lira City East assisted in visiting the scene.

Okema stated that the deceased were later transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem, while both motor vehicles remain at the scene awaiting towing.

According to the PRO, the driver of the Costa is in critical condition at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

Meanwhile, he stated that the other driver of the Fuso has reported himself to Kaberamaido Police Station and is awaiting transportation back to Lira City CPS for statement recording and to assist with investigations.

“It is a very unfortunate incident, and we urge drivers and other road users to always follow traffic laws to avoid such an incident,” Okema added.

According to preliminary police findings, the crash was caused by the Fuso truck driver’s reckless driving.

“So far, according to our hospital personnel, the number of victims who were in the Costa and rushed to the hospital is 16, while Fuso has 44,” said SP Okema.
