300 young women receive Grow project training certificates

Grow project

Lira | Nuwebiz Foundation has graduated at least 300 young women from refugee hosting districts.

The graduates were taught business and management skills.

The above foundation provided the training as part of the Grow project, which was supported by the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, as well as the Private Sector Foundation Uganda.

The World Bank is providing funding for the Grow project. Beneficiaries were trained in a variety of business enterprises, including soap making, hairdressing, tailoring, and bread baking. It lasted two weeks at Lira City Training Centre.

Rebecca Kukundakwe, gender specialist at Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), addressed the graduates and stated that the Grow project aims to economically empower women by training them in business and management.

She stated that as PSFU, their primary role in this project is to assist women in registering their businesses with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, obtaining product certification from the Uganda Bureau of Standards, and providing other business development services such as branding for easy marketing.

Kukundakwe, on the other hand, warned the women to remain loyal to their men and fulfil their gender roles as they became more empowered.

Sharon Okello, Executive Director of the Nuwebiz Foundation, expressed her commitment to training more women to benefit from this project.

The Grow project, according to Okello, aims to combat household poverty and lower the startlingly high rate of gender-based violence, of which poverty is a major cause.

She expressed gratitude to Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, for initiating the Grow project.

According to Okello, the project has helped women succeed in business.

“Our role as the Nuwebiz Foundation is to assist in the formation, establishment, and strengthening of women’s platforms in order to strategically engage with government MDAs, private sectors, and CSOs on key trade and business constraints and opportunities.”

Phase one of the training registered beneficiaries from Lamwo, Madi-Okollo, Obongi and Terego districts.

Nuwebiz said phase two will focus on Lango sub-region.
