Lira | On Friday, April 26, 2024, the central organising committee for the November 2 coronation announced that the cultural event would cost at least shs2.8 billion to make it colourful.
According to a government gazette signed by Gender, Labour, and Social Development Minister Betty Amongi, Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii has been degazetted as Lango’s Paramount Chief.
According to the gazette, his cultural service will end on November 1. His former aide, Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, will succeed him.
Speaking at the council meeting of Owitong, the government Chief Whip, also the MP of Ajuri county, Denis Hamson Obua, said the government shall support the event.
Obua, who pledged shs3 million, stated that our eyes as Lango people are on President Museveni.
“To ensure that we generate enough money, we will knock on the doors of various offices such as the Speaker of Parliament, Prime Minister, Vice President, Deputy Speaker, President, and so on, to ensure that our budget meets expectations.
“My humble appeal to the appointed members of the coronation, let us complete the necessary work ahead of schedule so that the victory day comes to an end,” Obua stated.
While presenting the budget estimate, the vice chairperson for the organising committee, Maxwell Akora Maruzi (MP Maruzi county), stated that the budget will be allocated in various ways.
Money will be allocated to several areas, including mobilisation and publicity, transportation and logistics, welfare and refreshments, security, and first aid.
The chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group, Judith Alyek (Kole woman MP), announced that her group will contribute shs31 million to the event.
However, Alyek will contribute shs2m from her own bag.
“I am now encouraged; everyone in Lango must welcome this coronation, and I know the government will respond by building the Lango Palace,” Alyek said.
Gofferey Etwop, a tycoon and Ober clan leader, stated that we will go to every corner to seek support in order to raise funds.
Owitong’s council meeting agreed that each clan would contribute shs1 million. Lango has at least 149 clans.
As of Friday, shs1 million of the needed shs2.8 billion had been collected. Pledges totaled shs100m.
