Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division commander Maj Gen Dick Olum has reassured the people of Rwenzori of UPDF’s commitment to ensuring peace, stability and safety in the region.

Gen Dick promised while officiating as a chief guest at the celebrations to mark the 43rd Tarehe Sita Anniversary on February 6, 2024, at Buhinga Stadium in Fort Portal City.

“The UPDF and Mountain Division in particular is working tirelessly to ensure that the peace, safety and freedoms of the Wannainchi are safeguarded,” he said.

He announced that peace is “assured now and in future when the current leadership is long gone”. He attributed this to the strong foundation the current leadership has laid for the future.

“We keep a bit worried, what will happen after we are long gone, but still think we are in a position to lay a foundation that will not be shaken. We thank the government for standing strong to safeguard the people of Uganda,” he added.

The deputy RCC of Fort Portal City Emanuel Busingye applauded UPDF Mountain Division for the various activities undertaken with the Wananchi during the army week.

He urged Ugandans to safeguard the achievements attained since 1986.

The celebrations to mark the anniversary began with activities within Fort Portal City a week ago where the UPDF Mountain Division medical team organised a medical camp at Kagote Health Centre 3 where the Wannainchi were treated for various ailments.

The same was concluded with a “march of troops, local government leaders and Wanainchi” around Fort Portal City.

The celebrations which commemorate the beginning of the 1981- 86 liberation struggle by the National Resistance Army (NRA) were also attended by the chairman of Kabarole district Richard Rwabuhinga, RDC of Kabarole Festus Bindenba, according to Major Bilal Katamba, Public Information Officer of UPDF Mountain Division/Operation Shujaa.

The national celebrations for Tarehe Sita took place in Bugweri district, Busoga sub-region and was attended by President Museveni.

Fifty-one Ugandans were given medals for their efforts.
