Kampala – July 22, 2022: On Thursday, the President of the Democratic Party [DP] Norbert Mao was appointed Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister less than 24 hours after signing a cooperation agreement with NRM national chairman and President Yoweri Museveni.
According to President Museveni, Mao is “foresighted and constructive”. The 77-year-old is proud to work with him.
Mao, former Gulu district LC5 Chairman, Gulu Municipality MP, sometimes bashed NRM for mistreating the opposition.
He has on many occasions bashed the National Unity Platform [NUP] party leadership, accusing the party of being an “NRM project”.
Today, the DP top man is half yellow-half green. Mao was appointed alongside three others on Thursday.
On Friday [today], news broke that he would appear before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee for vetting and approval.
The 55-year-old DP leader will take over from Muruli Mukasa – the Public Service Minister who has been caretaking the Justice Ministry as minister since January 2022.
“We are not going to apologize for cooperating with a party (NRM) that has been accused of multiple offenses against the Ugandan people. We do not accept the false dichotomy. We focus on the areas we think can be a starting point for building national consensus,” Mao emphasized on July 21, as reported by the Daily Monitor.
