Soroti, August 2, 2022: According to the police and humanitarian support team, death toll from Mt Elgon sub-region has risen to 23. Hundreds are now homeless following heavy rain last week.
Eleven people who were heading for a traditional marriage ceremony in Kabwangasi sub-county in Butebo district have been identified.
Speaking on Monday, the Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga said 23 bodies were recovered by Monday.
He added the teams from the police were dispatched to help in the search of the missing people
On Saturday July 30, River Nabuyonga burst after a night heavy rainfall and the occupants of the car were swept into Nabuyonga Bridge.
Hassan Kasandha, a groom, said the deceased were travelling from Kampala to attend his introduction ceremony, Daily Monitor reported.
“They were coming to attend my introduction. They were travelling in one vehicle and they all died after their car was swept into the river by the floods.”
Three of the deceased have been identified as Prossy Nalubega, Richard Mulindwa and Edward Mugumy. The deceased are siblings and were residents of Kabaga Village in Kiteeza, a Kampala suburb. They were also Kasadha’s neighbours in Kabaga.
Fatalities could rise as more people are “yet to be retrieved”. The government is committing to support affected families with shs5m each and relief aid are to be dispatched.
