Lake Victoria: Death toll reaches 30, many missing – Police


“29 confirmed dead and 27 rescued. The figures have changed from what I gave last night. Marine team are doing whatever they can to find more bodies,” Patrick Onyango – the deputy Police spokesperson said in one of his Tweets on Sunday.


Twenty three [23] extra bodies were recovered on Sunday with many people still missing. This follows a Saturday deadly boat accident [when it capsized in Lake Victoria].

Both UPDF and Uganda Police marine teams are taking charge, with efforts to retrieve more bodies. One more dead person was found on Sunday morning – our reporter says.

Retrieved dead bodies have been taken to Kampala City Mortuary in Mulago national hospital for postmortem and preservation.

Brig Richard Karemire, the army spokesperson said in a statement: “It is a sad moment. UPDF and UPF marine units continue on a search and rescue mission on the waters of Lake Victoria for survivors and those perished in the boat cruise from KK beach.”

At least 100 revelers were said to be aboard, including Prince David Wasajja – brother to Buganda King – Kabaka Ronald Mutebi, singer Iryn Namubiru and city businessman, John Fredrick Kiyimba were among some rescued.
