Sources in government say, with the rise of Omicron variant, government’s decision to fully reopen the economy in Jan. 2022 might be rethought.
Lira – 17, December 2021: Since March 2021 when Uganda commenced mass Covid-19 vaccinations, as of 15 December, 7,888,584 people have been vaccinated – according to the Ministry of Health’s Friday statistics.
The ministry has also tested 2,046,278 people. Of those tested, 128,509 have tested positive – and 3,272 have died from the pandemic.
Vaccination, government say, is central to reopening the economy next year. Although President Museveni has already informed Ugandans his government will open up the economy in 2022, a source in government says, with the rise of Omicron variant, such decision might be rethought.
For example, in the United Kingdom, over 170,000 cases have been recorded within 48hrs. According to The Guardian, “UK reports 93,045 news cases, breaking daily record again.”
“We are actually getting concerned with the infections in the UK and elsewhere,” added our source who preferred not to be named.
Uganda continues to receive vaccines from rich nations. China, Germany, Belgium; USA and others have supported the East African country since vaccines became available.
On Friday, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong said, “600k does of Sinovac vaccine donated by China is expected to arrive in Uganda in a few days.”
In July, China donated 300,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine to Uganda. To date, it has donated more than a million doses to boost the national inoculation targets.
