Lira – January 31, 2022: Uganda reopened its economy on January 10 and 24 respectively following President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s end of year and New Year address on December 31, 2021.

Addressing the nation that day, President allowed schools to reopen on January 10; public transport and other sectors equally reopened.

Bar owners were told to wait until January 24 to resume operations after more than 700 days of closure because of the pandemic.

On Monday night in Gulu City, streets were somewhat empty as few bars were seen opened and allowing customers in.

Some bar owners told TND News they are still waiting for the official reopening by the government, others say they lack capital to restart.

What is happening? Since the economy resumed and Ugandans can move freely from North to East, Central to West and South and vice-versa, the rate of infections seem to be dwindling.

According to the Ministry of Health latest figures, only 79 out of 4,740 tests done on January 29 were positive. The test positivity rate (TPR) stands at 1.7% from 3.3% on January 28.

The country’s cumulative confirmed cases stand at 161,772.
