The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has blamed Lira City Council authorities for failing to protect their property.
The corporation cites open manholes which have turned into agents of road crashes within the business center.
According to NWSC, over 69% of manholes along major roads are currently uncovered, putting pedestrians and motorists’ lives in danger.
NWSC area water manager Gerazio Tukahirwa told tndNews that their (corporation) projects have suffered several setbacks as a result of the city authorities’ poor policy implementation.
He stated that all of these manholes had covers, but they were stolen by unscrupulous individuals who colluded with scrap dealers in the city centre.
Majority of the manholes, Tukahirwa said, had metallic covers, and now some of them are removed. “We tried concrete covers and still they were taken away.
“We thought of buying plastic covers but now we are again molding concrete covers. But please, reach out to the city and ask them what they are doing to protect these covers,” Tukahirwa told our reporter.
When reached for a comment on NWSC blames, Robert Okello Ayo, the acting city communications officer, said they are not responsible for such.
Okello instead advised NWSC to devise a mechanism for protecting their property in the city centre.
