5 infantry division welcomes new deputy commander

The 5 Infantry Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has welcomed Colonel Gai Fraser Mpadwa as its new Deputy Division Commander.

A formal handover ceremony presided over by the Division Commander, Major General Keith Katungi has taken place.

The ceremony, confirmed by the Division’s Public Information Officer, Captain Edrin Mawanda, marked the transition from the outgoing deputy, Colonel David Opeero, who has been transferred to the Mountain Division to assume a similar role.

In his address, Maj Gen Keith Katungi commended the outgoing commander for his service. He praised Colonel Opeero for his “professionalism, dedication, and contribution to the Division’s operational success” during his tenure.

During his farewell speech, Colonel Opeero expressed his gratitude to Maj Gen Katungi, as well as the unit’s commanders and staff officers, for the supportive command environment he experienced while serving with the 5th Division.

The incoming Deputy Commander, Colonel Gai Fraser Mpadwa, thanked Maj Gen Katungi for the mentorship and opportunity, pledging to build upon the work of his predecessor and to ensure the Division’s missions are executed effectively.

The handover ceremony was attended by senior military officers, including brigade and battalion commanders, staff officers, and regional political leaders.

This leadership change reinforces the UPDF’s standard practice of strategic rotations, ensuring experienced command across its various formations.
