Lira City on “fire” as boda boda revenue protest causes road closures

Lira | On Monday, 16 June 2026, police in North Kyoga deployed dozens of officers to disperse boda boda riders.

The boda bodas and residents are currently protesting against the way the Lira City authority is collecting revenue from the riders.

The boda operators have been accusing the City authorities of unfair revenue collection, specifically citing a charge of shs35,000 per person.

As a result, the Lira–Soroti Highway was closed for two hours on Monday.

Police had to use their force to try to calm the situation.

As of 13:40 pm, our reporter, Denis Arao updated us: “All the shops are closed along Uhuru Barr, corner bar and corner Kakoge.”

This is a developing story.
