Kole | To boost the learning of pupils with disabilities and special needs at Wigwa Primary Boarding School in Kole North, MP Dr Samuel Opio Acuti has donated a solar panel inverter worth shs1.3 million.
The donation aims to improve academic performance at the school, which was ranked best in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE).
The donation event took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Dr Samuel Opio Acuti, the Kole North MP, noted that since the institution was established in 1925 as a missionary school—before the government took over in 1945—the school has operated without electricity, despite being a boarding school.
MP Acuti added that this is part of the manifesto he promised during his campaign: to support schools, churches, and various SACCO groups.
“This inverter has restored electricity power that will provide enough light, especially during night hours, to allow our children to access night lessons. This donation is part of my efforts to improve PLE performance in Kole North,” he said.
While receiving the equipment, Lawrence Olet, the head teacher, thanked MP Dr Acuti for being a kind person who cares for his community, especially the young generation with all kinds of disabilities.
“This was one of the biggest challenges before Dr Samuel Opio Acuti rescued us from darkness. With this restored power, we have hope of providing more candidates for the 2026 PLE.
“Apart from that, this power will allow disabled learners—especially those with hearing impairments—to interact freely at night,” Olet said.
Head teacher Olet noted that Wigwa Primary School has a total enrollment of over 1,600 learners.
Olet added that the school accommodates learners with all kinds of disabilities and special needs from across Kole North, with current disabled learners coming from different parts of Lango, including Oyam, Lira, Alebtong, and Kole itself.
The institution has been gazetted to allow all pupils with disabilities to access free education without any segregation.
Olet lamented that the school faces challenges of staff accommodation, with only 25 teachers.
“We are calling upon well-wishers to support this school, for example, by fencing it, so that our children can be safe from accessing restricted areas. We are requesting the education department in the district to hear our request and come for intervention,” he said.
Jasper Arach, the Chairperson of the School Management Committee (SMC) of Wigwa Primary School, stated that the school has over 1,960 learners but faces numerous challenges, including a shortage of desks.
“During class hours, our teachers cannot move freely in the classroom because of overcrowding. There is also a water shortage. We are happy with this solar panel because it is going to improve the security of our school, especially during night hours,” Arach said.
SMC chair Arach further stated that they are advocating for any NGO to come and help them with a toilet block.
“Currently, disabled learners are mixing with able learners, which is not right. At the moment, we need more toilet blocks to boost high levels of sanitation.”
He also called upon security personnel in Kole to conduct night operations within Wigwa Primary School because there is a high level of criminal activity.
Arach noted that one of his teachers was recently beaten by an unknown person while heading back home after buying medicine for a sick person from a drug shop.
