Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced that the country will shift more attention towards the Gaza mission as it withdraws its troops from Somalia. In a message posted on his official X account on November 6, 2026, Muhoozi stated: “As we withdraw all our troops from Somalia. We shall focus more on the Gaza mission.” His remarks have sparked interest because of the possible implications for Uganda’s future military engagements.
The announcement comes after Uganda maintained a military presence in Somalia for many years as part of regional and international efforts to support security and combat the Al-Shabaab militant group. Ugandan soldiers have played a major role in operations aimed at stabilising Somalia and supporting its government against armed insurgents.
Muhoozi did not explain when the proposed withdrawal would be completed or provide details about the arrangements being considered for the troops currently serving in Somalia. He also did not clarify whether the withdrawal would cover every Ugandan military deployment or only particular categories of forces.
His reference to the Gaza mission has also raised questions about what role Uganda could potentially play in the conflict-affected Palestinian territory. He did not specify whether he was referring to a peacekeeping operation, humanitarian security support or another form of military involvement.

Gaza has remained at the centre of international attention because of the prolonged conflict involving Israel and Palestinian armed groups, alongside the humanitarian crisis affecting civilians. Any international mission in the territory would require clear arrangements concerning its mandate, participating countries and security responsibilities.
The announcement comes at a time when Muhoozi has increasingly used his social media platforms to communicate his views on Uganda’s military priorities and international affairs. His latest message suggests that he wants the country to consider a different area of focus as its involvement in Somalia changes.
However, no detailed operational plan, deployment schedule or official explanation of Uganda’s proposed role in Gaza accompanied the statement. It therefore remains unclear what specific responsibilities Ugandan forces would undertake or whether discussions with international partners have already taken place.
For now, Muhoozi’s declaration has placed Uganda’s future military involvement in Somalia and the possibility of a Gaza mission in the spotlight. Attention will be on the Ministry of Defence and the UPDF for further clarification on the proposed withdrawal and what the army chief means by focusing more on Gaza.
