Political activist and pastor Sammy Okanya has reportedly spent three days in police custody at Katwe Police Station following allegations involving an unpaid $10,000 debt owed to a Sudanese national.
According to reports, Okanya borrowed the money to support religious activities, including preaching, organising crusades and travelling abroad to spread the Christian message. The funds were allegedly intended to help him expand his ministry and reach more people through religious outreach programmes.
However, the reports claim that the pastor failed to repay the money after encountering financial difficulties. His followers allegedly contributed only small amounts in tithes, leaving him unable to raise the funds needed to settle the debt.
The alleged creditor, identified as a Sudanese national, is reportedly at the centre of the matter that led to Okanya’s arrest. Details about the exact lending agreement, repayment deadline and circumstances surrounding the complaint have not yet been clearly established.
Okanya’s reported detention at Katwe Police Station has attracted attention because of his public profile as both a political activist and a religious leader. His activities have placed him in the public eye, making the latest reports about his personal financial troubles a subject of discussion.
The situation also highlights the financial challenges that some religious leaders may encounter when attempting to organise large-scale church activities, crusades and international ministry trips without reliable sources of funding.
However, the allegations surrounding the $10,000 loan remain claims, and it is not yet clear whether the matter is being handled as a criminal complaint or a dispute over repayment of a private debt. No detailed public response from Okanya has been provided in the reports.
As questions continue to emerge about his reported arrest, attention will be on the police and the parties involved to clarify the circumstances of the case. It also remains unclear whether Okanya has been released, formally charged or is still being held at Katwe Police Station.
