Police have arrested a woman who was reportedly with Afrigo Band legend Moses Matovu shortly before the confrontation that led to his death in Kibuli, Kampala.

The woman, identified as Rose Tumusiime, commonly known as “Ndibaasa,” is currently in police custody and is assisting detectives with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death.

According to preliminary police findings, Matovu, aged 77, went to the woman’s residence at around 5:30am on Thursday in the Kibuli Depot area of Makindye Division.

Police said Matovu and Tumusiime were leaving the residence when they were allegedly confronted by a man who had reportedly previously been in a relationship with the woman.

The confrontation is believed to have turned physical, leaving Matovu with serious injuries.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the female suspect remains in custody as detectives continue establishing what exactly happened during the incident.

“The female suspect remains in police custody and is assisting detectives with the ongoing investigations,” Kawala said.

Police have reportedly identified the male suspect who is believed to have been involved in the confrontation. However, he allegedly fled the scene and remains the subject of a police manhunt.

Investigators are now working to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation and the specific role played by each person who was present at the scene.

Matovu was reportedly rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider after sustaining serious injuries.

Despite efforts to save him, the veteran musician later succumbed to his injuries, sending shockwaves through Uganda’s entertainment industry.

Police have cautioned that several accounts surrounding the incident are still being verified, meaning some claims circulating about what happened before and during the confrontation have not yet been confirmed.

The investigation therefore remains ongoing as detectives seek to establish the sequence of events that resulted in the death of the celebrated musician.

Moses Matovu was a founding figure and longtime leader of Afrigo Band, one of Uganda’s longest-running musical groups, and played a major role in its development and survival over several decades.

His death has attracted widespread attention from musicians, fans and members of the public, while police continue searching for the male suspect and questioning those who may have information about the incident.
