Two people have died and several others sustained serious injuries following another road accident along the Kabale-Kisoro Road in Rubanda district.

The fatal crash happened on Monday at around 2:00pm in Murutenga Village, Hamurwa Sub-county, when a Toyota Noah vehicle, registration number UAX 824H, overturned several times while travelling along the busy highway.

According to police reports, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while descending a steep slope. Police attributed the crash to suspected speeding, which caused the vehicle to overturn.

One of the victims died instantly at the scene of the accident. She was identified as 58-year-old Reverend Sister Tugumenawe Mary Gorret Kenda, a nun attached to Rushoroza Catholic Diocese in Kabale.

Another passenger, whose identity had not yet been established, died shortly after arriving at Rubanda Hospital where he had been taken for medical attention.

Several other passengers suffered serious injuries in the crash and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Among those injured were 47-year-old Katushabe Jenerus, a resident of Nyakabungo Village in Bufundi Sub-county, 30-year-old Hakiza Abed, a Rwandan national, and 54-year-old Garuka Hamis.

The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime, extended condolences to the families of the deceased, the Catholic Church and members of Sister Tugumenawe’s congregation.

Tumushime also wished the injured passengers a quick recovery as they continue receiving medical care.

The accident adds to growing concerns about road safety on the Kabale-Kisoro route, which has several steep sections requiring motorists to exercise extra caution.

Police have continued to urge drivers to avoid speeding, refrain from overloading vehicles and ensure that their vehicles are mechanically fit before using the roads.
