A total of 513 cows have been recovered from Karamojong cattle warriors since a security operation began early this year.

The operation, enforced by the UPDF 5 Division, aims to ensure that locals can live peacefully alongside their animals.

This was revealed by Captain Ibrahim Kasule Sekitto, the Public Information Officer of the 5th Division.

Captain Sekitto told journalists that on September 29, 2026, at around 2:00 pm, two Karamojong warriors armed with bows and arrows were put out of action in Kasiri and Longtac areas, Kitgum district.

He noted that a total of 18 warriors from Karamoja and South Sudan have been put out of action since January, bringing the total number of recovered animals to 513.

The PIO added that the Division forces have registered tremendous success against the Karamojong warriors who come to rustle cattle in the areas of East Acholi, an area neighbouring Karamoja.

He also said the 5 Infantry Division Commander, Maj Gen Keith Katungi, has assured locals of the responsibility for security and protection against the warriors.

Maj Gen Katungi encouraged and advised the community to take their animals to community-protected kraals and to always avoid leaving their animals to graze without a herdsman looking after them, which gives an easy chance to rustlers.

Since Maj Gen Keith Katungi was posted in 2023, PIO said there has been total peace in the North, especially regarding the Karamojong cattle warriors who in the past used to enter the Acholi and Lango sub-regions.
