Schools in Lamwo district are using the annual Scouts and Girl Guides competition to equip learners with practical life skills, leadership abilities and a sense of responsibility towards their communities.

The competition, organised annually by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) during the second term, brings together learners to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in areas that complement classroom learning.

Oweka George, the Lamwo District Sports Officer, said the competition provides an opportunity for learners to demonstrate practical skills in different areas, including life skills, environmental conservation, sanitation, accident management and first aid, as well as project work.

The activities expose learners to practical knowledge that can be applied in their schools, homes and communities, while also promoting teamwork, discipline and leadership.

Edule Denis, the Chief Assessor, said the competition assesses learners’ abilities in several areas, with emphasis on skills that can contribute to their personal development and community wellbeing.

Among the key areas assessed are environmental conservation and sanitation, which encourage learners to appreciate the importance of protecting their surroundings and maintaining healthy living conditions.

Learners also participate in first aid and accident management activities, helping them acquire basic knowledge on how to respond appropriately to emergencies.

Project work is another component of the competition, giving Scouts and Girl Guides an opportunity to demonstrate creativity, teamwork and their ability to undertake activities aimed at addressing challenges within their communities.

Following the district-level competition, the winning teams will represent Lamwo at the National Scouts and Girl Guides Camping scheduled for August 23–28 at Kaazi in Wakiso district.

Paloga Primary School will represent Lamwo with both boys and girls in the Scouts category, while Beyogoya Primary School will represent the district in the Girl Guides category.

The annual competition continues to provide schools with a platform to nurture young people beyond academic achievement by promoting practical skills, teamwork, leadership, environmental responsibility and community service.
