Lira City | The Government of Uganda has declared one day every month for national cleaning. The first event will start on July 25, 2026.
Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja, will lead citizens in cleaning and carrying out other activities aimed at improving national hygiene.
A Cabinet decision was made on August 11, 2025, that one day would be dedicated to cleaning Uganda.
According to the government, the initiative will beautify Uganda, protect the environment, and prevent diseases that affect Ugandans such as cholera.
All districts, municipalities and cities’ leaders are mandated to mobilise their residents to take part in the event.
RDCs, RCCs and accounting officers are to take charge and ensure smooth implementation.
Meanwhile, Uganda Police Force has on Friday issued a statement, warning motorists against using roads between 7am and 10am, hours earmarked for national cleaning.
“This exercise is part of the government of Uganda’s efforts to promote a cleaner environment, improve public health and prevent diseases associated with poor sanitation,” part of the Force’s statement reads.
Meanwhile, tndNews, Uganda, Managing Editor, Milton Emmy Akwam, has advised the government to also think about “Compulsory Tree Planting Day (CTPD).”
He proposes CTPD to be a quarterly initiative where every household plants at least 20 tree seedlings (different tree species) to deal with the current overwhelming effects of climate change, and hunger.
“Those battling hunger-related illnesses, or who can’t afford what to eat, will rule themselves out of this very important National Cleaning Day,” Akwam says.
He added: “How will the government convince families whose dear ones are dying or have died of hunger in Acholi and Karamoja sub-regions that National Cleaning Day is compulsory?”
