The North Kyoga Regional Police have assured the public of adequate security ahead of the LC1 elections scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The regional force said on Monday that all the necessary preparations were completed to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Speaking to journalists at the District Police Commander’s offices in Lira City, North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema said police, together with other security agencies, have finalised comprehensive operational plans to safeguard voters, candidates and election officials throughout the exercise.
Okema said the Regional Police Commander directed all District Police Commanders within the region to develop detailed operational orders and deployment plans tailored to their respective areas to ensure effective security during the elections.
“I have received all the deployment and operational plans from the districts, and we are fully prepared to secure the LC1 elections,” Okema said.
He noted that police will not work alone but coordinate with other security stakeholders to maintain law and order, acknowledging that village-level elections often generate intense local competition that can easily escalate into violence if not properly managed.
According to SP Okema, police commanders and district community liaison officers have intensified community policing activities during the campaign period by identifying and mapping potential security hotspots while engaging communities to promote peaceful participation.
He added that security teams have also met candidates and their campaign teams to remind them of the legal framework governing elections and warned against acts such as inciting violence, intimidation and other forms of electoral misconduct.
“Any grievances arising from the election process should be addressed through the established legal channels rather than through violence or disorder,” he said.
Okema further warned candidates and supporters against disrupting the vote-counting process, saying security personnel are prepared to deal firmly with anyone attempting to interfere with the exercise.
He cautioned voters against electoral malpractices, including crossing from one voting line to another, and prohibited drunkenness within polling areas, emphasising that anyone found disrupting the election process will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Local Government Act.
To enhance security and ensure a rapid response to any incidents, Okema said police will conduct both motorised and foot patrols throughout the election period.
He appealed to residents across the North Kyoga to cooperate with security personnel, remain peaceful, and exercise their democratic rights responsibly to ensure the elections are conducted in a free, fair and orderly environment.
Uganda is carrying out LC1 elections today (July 28), with voters mandated to line up behind candidates of their choice.
