Lira City | The Lango Cultural Institution (LCI) has entered a landmark partnership with Ernest Cook University to boost higher education access for students from the Lango sub-region.
The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Lango Cultural Centre, under which Ernest Cook University will offer 12 scholarships annually comprising full scholarships and half bursaries specifically for students from Lango pursuing programmes in health sciences.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ernest Cook University spokesperson Faray Joseph emphasised the institution’s commitment to youth development in the region.
“The university is committed to investing in the education of young people from the region,” Joseph said. The scholarships will cover tuition costs in full or in part, removing financial barriers and enabling talented students to pursue university education.
The partnership is expected to run for an initial five years, with the possibility of expanding the number of beneficiaries based on its success.
Beyond education, the initiative aims to strengthen ties between the university and the Lango community while contributing to long-term poverty reduction.
The Lango Cultural Institution’s Minister for Education and Culture, George Ojwang Opota, welcomed the partnership, calling it a significant investment in the future of the Lango people.
He described Ernest Cook University as a quality institution and urged eligible students from the sub-region to seize the opportunity to transform their lives through higher education.
Ojwang also highlighted LCI’s ongoing efforts in education, revealing that the institution’s own scholarship programme has so far supported more than 2,000 students, many of whom have successfully completed their university studies.
Application process for the Ernest Cook University scholarships are expected to be released soon.
Students from the Lango sub-region interested in health sciences programmes are encouraged to stay updated through the Lango Cultural Institution’s official channels.
This collaboration marks a positive step toward improving educational outcomes and human capital development in northern Uganda.
