The Bunyoro sub-regional National Resistance Movement (NRM) meeting with the party secretariat has issued warnings to the party leaders against supporting independent and opposition candidates vying for local council one and women council positions in the upcoming local council elections.
In a meeting organised by the NRM secretariat at the weekend in Hoima City, different party leaders, including Resident District and City Commissioners (RCCs and RCCs), revealed that some party leaders were supporting and pushing independent and opposition candidates in the upcoming elections.
Speaking during the same meeting, Caroline Nashemeza, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kikuube, noted that some local leaders, including LC3s within her area of operation, are fully supporting independent candidates.
This is an act which she said is tearing up the NRM party and also causing segregations.
According to her, the party leaders’ support for others is contrary to the NRM party guidelines, thus calling for security actions to arrest the wrongdoers.
“We have leaders supporting independent candidates in the names of those who have been there for them during the time of the January general elections,” she said.
“Therefore, I am going to arrest whoever is in the act within my district,” Nashemeza threatened.
Fred Bataligaya, the vice NRM chairperson of Kiryadongo district, wonders why the top party officials conflict with each other.
Rogers Byamukama, the MP for Masindi Municipality, called for the need to eliminate the infighting between NRM and PLU, which, according to him, has confused governance and the chain of command in the community.
He also called on the government to offer better facilitation for LC1s, noting the crucial roles they play in shaping the national agenda.
Jonard Asiimwe, who doubles as both the NRM national vice chairperson for Western and the NRM chairperson for Hoima City, warns against internal fights, calling for members to remain patriotic and disciplined throughout the exercise.
While responding to conflicts between NRM and PLU, he said that PLU is not yet a political party in the process of joining the NRM party.
As a party, he said they need to win the local elections, adding that village and parish leadership is critical in mobilising communities for government projects. He added that if the flag bearers get fought and lose, it will be a negative.
Stephen Byaruhanga, the RDC, Kibaale district, says they remain committed to maintaining the party’s strength by ensuring grassroots mobilisation and ensuring that the party excels maximally across the region.
He, however, called on the party members to support their own candidates.
Violet Kabasindi Kiberu, the Bunyoro sub-regional NRM secretariat coordinator, said the purpose of the meeting was to bring together all NRM party leaders to strengthen mobilisation ahead of the local council elections.
She challenged the regional leaders to get more involved in these elections and to guide the community to elect uncompromised village leaders.
NRM party director for legal affairs Enock Barata told the meeting that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni rallies Ugandans to take keen interest in the upcoming local council elections, with more priorities in those who will help push further the NRM agenda.
He noted that village leadership is essential in fighting against poverty and the whole of prosperity for all by being the foot soldiers in mobilising wananchi to take part in wealth creation.
“I call all Ugandans to turn up in big numbers and vote for LC1, LC2 and women council, especially NRM flag bearers,” he said.
