Dokolo | The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) leadership in Dokolo district has taken a bold step to rally support for incumbent Woman Member of Parliament Sarah Aguti Nyangkori.
The leaders urge potential challengers from the UPC and other political parties to step aside and allow Agut to run unopposed.
During a packed conference at St. Francis Xavier Vocational School in Dokolo prior to the Dokolo by-election, Aguti was officially endorsed as the party’s sole candidate.
That event, attended by 204 delegates from across the district, saw two potential candidates, Anna Okwir and Josephine Acen Atia, voluntarily withdraw their bids in her favor.
“Hon. Aguti’s transformative leadership speaks for itself. We must rally behind her,” declared Lilly Oluk Benson, UPC elder in Dokolo district, while handing over a new Type C ambulance to the district health department.
The ambulance is Aguti’s latest donation to improve healthcare access.
“We recognize Hon. Aguti’s unwavering service to Dokolo. Her leadership deserves our full backing,” said Haron Ocen Ogwal Anata, UPC General Secretary, Dokolo South.
Ocen thanked MP Aguti for her wonderful work in distributing exam materials to all primary schools (P6 and P7).
She has also donated mattresses and boxes to schools and health centers, as well as contributed to women’s economic empowerment programs.
“In just one year, she’s outperformed predecessors who served full terms,” noted Haron Ocen Anata.
Aguti, who previously carried the party’s flag in the 2021 general election, is recognized for grassroots initiatives in education and healthcare.
Regarding party unity, leaders argue that avoiding a divisive primary will improve the UPC’s chances against rival parties.
With general elections approaching, Dokolo leaders believe that consolidating resources behind a single candidate is pragmatic.
Anna Okwir, former aspirant, stated, “I stepped down for the betterment of our party and district. Sarah’s experience is unmatched.”
Josephine Acen Atia, another former aspirant, said, “This is about Dokolo’s future, not individual ambitions.”
MP Aguti told tndNews that if re-elected, she would “redouble efforts” for Dokolo, emphasizing her plans to increase maternal health services and vocational training.
While the UPC rallies behind Aguti, other parties, such as the NRM and FDC, have yet to finalize their candidates, paving the way for a potentially heated next election.
Aguti was elected in March 2024 to replace Iron Lady Cecilia Atim Ogwal, who died from India.
