Lira City Central Police Station is investigating a serious road traffic crash that occurred on May 20, 2026, at about 5:30 pm along Obote Avenue in Lira City.
Preliminary findings by the police indicate that a motor vehicle registration number UBQ 935F, a blue Toyota Hiace, driven by a yet to be identified driver, was reportedly coming from the Uhuru Bar side following Obote Avenue.
The Hiace, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga region, said, was heading towards Lira City Centre.
At the same time, motorcycle registration number UMA 845FL, a blue Spiro ridden by an unidentified rider, was coming from Aduku roundabout heading towards Lira City Centre.
“It is alleged that upon reaching the former Centenary Bank roundabout along Obote Avenue, the driver of the Toyota Hiace failed to properly negotiate the roundabout, he lost control of the vehicle and knocked the motorcycle off the road,” SP Okema explained.
The vehicle further rammed into the chain-link guards at Finca Bank before overturning. The vehicle reportedly had five passengers on board together with the driver, and according to eyewitnesses, none of the passengers sustained injuries apart from the motorcycle rider who was injured in the crash.
The driver of the motor vehicle allegedly fled from the scene to an unknown destination immediately after the crash.
Further preliminary investigations indicate that “suspected reckless driving could have been the cause of the crash,” according to SP Okema.
Police officers led by No. 69390 PC Walalawo John visited and documented the scene, the PRO said on Thursday.
Both the motor vehicle and the motorcycle were towed and are currently parked at Lira City CPS pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Efforts to trace and apprehend the driver are ongoing, while inquiries into the matter continue.
The police urge all road users to observe traffic regulations, especially while approaching roundabouts and busy junctions, in order to prevent crashes and safeguard lives.
