National—19, July 2020: Uganda, known globally as the “Peal of Africa” is yet to record any Covid-19 related death in nearly six months since the first case was reported in March.

Uganda’s Ministry of Health and government elected incredible measures and restrictions, among them extended lockdowns, banning all public gatherings, introduction of curfew, ‘compulsory wearing of mask, among other measures to control mass spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

Whereas some of these restrictions were difficult to abide by, it has produced ‘tremendous achievements’—opines TND News and Great Lakes Centre For Strategic Media Studies’ Founder, Milton Emmy Akwam.

He adds that if it’s true, that nobody is yet to die because of Covid-19, “It is a high time the Ministry of Health and entire team (doctors, nurses) be bestowed with maximum credit by everybody.”

And while Covid-19 continues to destabilize East Africa for example, causing deaths of nationals, threatening economic strengths and tourism industry, Uganda is the only country to suffer from the former, but facing serious economic break in her key sectors.

Uganda’s coronavirus success has been attributed to unexpected recovery figures that now stand at 1,071. This figure, however, involves both Uganda nationals and foreigners, according to the Ministry of Health.

Besides 238,709 total cumulative samples tested since March, of that figure, only 1,056 people have been confirmed positive.

New cases continue to be recorded

On Saturday, 18 July 2020, three new Covid-19 cases were confirmed out of 3,045 samples tested on the same day, the Ministry announces, Sunday afternoon.

According to the Ministry, one truck driver who arrived from Tanzania via Mutukula point of entry, one was a returnee from South Sudan and another case, was a contact from Gulu district.

Twelve foreign truck drivers tested positive for Covid-19 at the border points of entry, and their entry into the country was not permitted.
