Nine gangsters rape a 20-year-old businesswoman in Lira City at 1am

Lira City West Division police are investigating a case of gang rape registered and earlier recorded at Amuca Police Post.

On May 2, 2026, at 1am, the victim, identified as Akech Elizabeth, 20, businesswoman and resident of Aminyanga Cell, Amuca Ward, Lira City West Division, was in the company of the complainant, Aceng Naume, and three other colleagues.

The ladies had been spending leisure time at Grand Paradise Hotel in Amuca and were escorting one of their colleagues home.

Upon reaching Owiti Cell, the group was reportedly attacked by a group of over ten unidentified males, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga region confirmed.

The assailants, SP Okema said, forcefully seized Akech, dragged her into a nearby bush, and seven of them allegedly subjected her to gang rape. “After the ordeal, the victim was released,” the PRO said in a statement.

He added: “As the victim made her way home, at around 2am, upon reaching Olago Cell, she reportedly encountered two additional unidentified men who also sexually assaulted her.”

Meanwhile, the other individuals who had been in her company managed to escape and promptly reported the matter to police.

Police have since conducted an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of six suspects.

The suspected gangsters are identified as Ogwang Stanley, 20, Okot Janan, 17, Odok Joshua, 20, Ocaya Emmanuel, 21, Mule Emmy, 20, and Ayo Brian, 17.

They are currently in police custody pending further interrogation. Meanwhile, the victim has been medically examined and duly completed. The Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) visited and documented the scene, and relevant forensic evidence was recovered to support ongoing investigations.

Preliminary findings indicate that some of the arrested suspects were found in possession of breaking implements and dangerous weapons, including a knife.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the crime, SP Okema added.
