Primary teachers embrace science kit training to improve learning

Primary school teachers in Zombo district have welcomed a new training initiative aimed at improving the teaching of science through practical and learner-centred approaches.

The training, conducted by River Flow International in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports, focuses on the effective use of the Primary Science Kit, also known as the Mini Laboratory.

primary The programme is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen science education in primary schools by equipping teachers with practical tools and modern teaching methods.

Ngamita Lydia, the deputy headteacher of Kaya Primary School, said the training has simplified the way science is taught.

“Before receiving the science kits, teaching science was not easy. We spent a lot of time preparing learning aids, and sometimes lessons became teacher-centred,” she said.

“With these kits and the training, we have received, teaching is now easier. We have ready materials and can actively involve learners in the lessons.”

She commended the Ministry and district officials for selecting her school to benefit from the programme, expressing optimism that it will improve learners’ performance in science.

primary Utimkisa Luke, a headteacher of Ukemu Primary School in Zombo district, noted that the training has transformed teaching methods.

“Previously, we taught science in a teacher-centred way. But now, we have learned how to engage learners more effectively using practical approaches,” he said.

He added that the training has equipped teachers with the skills needed to deliver lessons more effectively and improve understanding among pupils.

At Nyapea Boys Primary School, headteacher Aweko Jilda said the availability of science kits will significantly reduce the time spent teaching certain topics.

“In the past, teaching a topic could take up to a month because we had to look for or improvise learning materials,” she said.

“Now, with the models provided in the kit, the same topic can be covered in about two weeks. This will improve both efficiency and learners’ understanding.”

The Primary Science Kit project is being rolled out to government-aided primary schools across the country to promote hands-on learning and improve performance in science subjects.

Teachers also praised the facilitators for delivering practical and engaging sessions that demonstrated how to use the kits effectively in classroom settings.

The partnership between River Flow International and the Ministry of Education and Sports is expected to play a key role in strengthening science education and fostering a more interactive learning environment in schools.
