Dokolo man, 44, kills wife after ex-husband’s phone calls

Lira

The Police in Dokolo district are investigating a horrific case of murder by hacking that occurred on the night of February 23, 2026. The incident took place between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm at Te-Amon village, Apeya parish, Adok sub-county.

North Kyoga Regional Police PRO SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, identified the suspect as Opio Denis, 44, a peasant farmer. The victim was his wife, Alwido Rose, 48, also a peasant farmer and resident of the same village.

SP Okema confirmed the incident to journalists in Lira City on Tuesday. He stated that the case was reported at Agwata Town Council Police Station on February 23, 2026, at about 11:50 pm by Ojok Jaspher, 28, a driver and neighbor to the deceased.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the trouble began earlier that day. At around 11:00 am, the deceased allegedly received phone calls from her former husband, during which the pair were reportedly negotiating a reunion. This communication allegedly angered her current husband, Opio Denis.

SP Okema explained that the tension culminated later that night. “Immediately, on the same date at around 10:00 pm, a domestic quarrel erupted between the couple over the said phone calls, which escalated into a physical fight,” he said.

“During the altercation, the suspect allegedly picked up a panga and cut the deceased on the back of the head, arms, and throat, causing her instant death at about 11:00 pm.”

Following the report, the District CID Officer for Dokolo, along with homicide officers, visited and documented the crime scene. The body of the deceased was recovered from the suspect’s bedroom and conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted.

The suspect, Opio Denis, has been arrested and is currently detained in police custody. Statements have been recorded from relevant witnesses to assist in the ongoing investigations.

Key exhibits recovered from the scene include the panga suspected to be the murder weapon, a blood-stained bedsheet, and a black trouser and long-sleeved shirt with blood stains, suspected to belong to the suspect.

SP Okema lamented the tragic incident, stating that the suspect remains in lawful custody. “Upon completion of inquiries, he will be arraigned before the courts of law to answer to charges of murder,” he said.

He added that the body of the deceased will be handed over to relatives for burial after the postmortem examination and all necessary police procedures are completed.

The Police have strongly condemned acts of domestic violence and urged the public to resolve domestic misunderstandings through dialogue, family mediation, or local leaders to prevent such tragic loss of life.

Those in a relationship and marriage should respect it, SP Okema advised.
