Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) owners in Lira successfully concluded a one-day capacity-building workshop designed to strengthen business operations, digital skills, and access to financial services.

The training, held under the theme “Beyond Borders,” took place on September 17, 2025, at Margarita Palace Hotel in Lira City.

The event was organised by Absa Bank in collaboration with several key partners, including Uganda Airlines, DHL Express Uganda, Grant Thornton, TATA Uganda, John Deere, Prudential, and Enterprise Uganda.

It brought together SME owners from across the Lango sub-region in Northern Uganda, equipping them with practical skills to enhance business management, expand operations, and safeguard their enterprises against emerging risks.

Participants received hands-on guidance in digital marketing, financing, insurance, and fraud prevention, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate the modern business landscape. The training also emphasised practical tools for improving operational efficiency, customer engagement, and cross-border trade opportunities.

Joshua Oder, Branch Manager of Absa Bank Lira, underscored the significance of equipping SMEs with practical business knowledge. “This training helps entrepreneurs manage their businesses effectively, reduce operational risks, and seize growth opportunities. By developing practical skills, business owners can make informed decisions and remain competitive in today’s fast-evolving market.”

Herbert Byaruhanga, Business Banking Director at Absa Bank, highlighted the pivotal role of the Absa Business Club in mentoring entrepreneurs.

Speaking to tndNews, he explained that the Club provides ongoing guidance, helping SMEs adopt innovative business approaches, access financial solutions, and enhance operational resilience.

“The mentorship component ensures that business owners are not just trained once but continue to grow and adapt their businesses sustainably,” Byaruhanga noted.

John Ariko Okelai, Regional Officer for Enterprise Uganda, encouraged SME owners to prioritise strong relationships with customers and maintain high standards of service.

“Building successful businesses requires dedication, adaptability, and responsiveness to market demands. Entrepreneurs must focus on excellence and innovation to thrive,” Ariko said.

He further noted that SMEs are vital to the region’s economic growth and can leverage cross-border trade opportunities for expansion.

Lillian Businyge, Head of SMEs at Grant Thornton, stressed the importance of understanding business policies and implementing best practices.
