Kole: Alito HCIII clinical officer killed by a reckless rider

Kole |A tragic road crash on January 6, 2025, has claimed the life of Alito health centre III clinical officer.

Babra Akwii, 27, was one of four people travelling by boda boda along the Lira-Kitgum road. Unlike her, three others remain in Lira Regional Referral Hospital, fighting for their lives.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in Apoka village, Ogur sub-county, Lira district, according to North Kyoga Region Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema.

Akwii died from her injuries after being transported to Lira Referral Hospital. The injured have been identified as Opio Francis and Alum Teddy, while the identities of the other victims are unknown due to their inability to communicate, according to SP Okema.

It is claimed that a white Mercedes-Benz with the registration number KBR 200H was traveling from Lira City to Ogur. When a motorcycle with registration number UGH 023N arrived in Apoka village, it attempted to overtake a trailer.

The motorcycle was carrying four passengers, including the late Akwii.

It reportedly collided with a road pavement, causing the rider to lose control. All of the passengers quickly fell off and were run over by the vehicle’s rear tires.

“The police were promptly notified, and a traffic team, led by the Officer in Charge of Traffic for Lira District, arrived at the scene. Both the motor vehicle and motorcycle have been impounded at Lira Police Station in Ogur for further inspection,” the PRO added.

He stated that preliminary investigations point to reckless riding by the motorcycle rider as a possible cause of the incident. He did, however, say that a thorough investigation is underway.

In light of this incident, North Kyoga Region Police urge all road users, particularly motorcyclists, to strictly follow traffic rules and regulations to avoid future crashes.

Motorcycle crashes are one of the leading causes of fatalities in the region and nationwide, according to police records.
