Why Aguti, a Dokolo woman MP, and others travelled to Ghana

Ghana

Last week, the Ugandan Parliament sent a delegation of seven MPs to Ghana to assess the country’s education system.

The Pearl of Africa MPs were on a benchmarking tour to discuss the educational framework, with a particular emphasis on teacher qualification management.

A proposed bill is before Parliament, and it seeks to, among other things, require Ugandan teachers to upgrade their qualifications to the degree level.

In an interview with tndNews from Ghana, Dokolo district woman MP Sarah Aguti Nyangkori, who also serves on the Ugandan Parliament’s education committee, thanked the government.

She applauded the NRM government for initiating what she calls “this important move to ensure that teachers are adequately qualified to compete on a global scale”.

Aguti, a UPC-affiliated MP, emphasized that education is critical to the nation’s future, highlighting the important role teachers play in providing learners with knowledge across various institutions.

She encouraged teachers to embrace the proposed Bill, which aims to enhance their qualifications, enabling them to teach in any country worldwide, provided they possess degree-level credentials in education.

During a meeting with Ugandan MPs on November 4 at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) headquarters, General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah praised the Ugandan government for recognizing the value of teacher qualifications in Ghana.

He noted that the education system in Ghana is robust, attributing the success of its teachers to their degree qualifications, which span from the lower levels to the upper stages of education.

Ismail Muhammad Lomwar from Kotido Municipality, Timuzigu Kamugisha Michael from Kajara County, and Kubeketerya James from Bunya County East are some of the education committee members who have returned from Ghana.

Others include Butemba County’s Bingi Patrick Nyanzi and Arua woman MP Paparu Lillian Obiale, and Aguti.
