Lango MPs speak following latest parliamentary committee changes

Lira | In the most recent designations, four Members of Parliament from the Lango sub-region have been appointed chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of the various sectoral committees of Parliament.

The reshuffle was officially made on Wednesday, June 19, during a parliamentary session presided over by Speaker Annet Anita Among Magogo.

In a meeting held on Wednesday at State House Entebbe, the ruling party National Resistance Movement’s Central Executive Committee sacked some committee chairpersons and deputies.

This new development stemmed from reports of budget corruption in committees involving Cissy Dionizia Namujju (Woman MP Lwengo district), Yusuf Mutembeli (MP Bunyole East), and Paul Akama (MP Busiki), all of whom have been brought before the High Court to face corruption-related charges.

Linda Agnes Auma, a Lira district woman Member of Parliament, has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture.

Janet Grace Akech Okori-Moe, the Abim district woman MP, will be replaced by Auma, who previously served as vice chairperson of the same committee.

Boniface Henry Okot, the Northern Uganda Youth MP, has also been appointed as the new vice chairperson of the trade, industries, and cooperatives committee.

Okot will succeed Catherine Lamwaka, the Omoro district woman MP.

In other appointments, Kole North MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti has been retained as the vice chairperson of the health committee, and Kwania County MP Ayoo Tonny, who was recently appointed as the vice coordinator for the Patriotic League of Uganda in Lango, has been retained as the vice chairperson of ICT and national guidance.

MP Auma Linda stated on Wednesday that she did not lobby for the position and thanked the Central Executive Committee for its trust in her after thoroughly reviewing her record.

“The agricultural sector is a very sensitive sector and I will ensure that there is equality in the distribution of resources to all parts of the country,” Auma said.

She emphasised that she will work hard to ensure that the country’s agricultural sector contributes to the nation’s growth.

Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti stated that the health sector receives about Shs3 trillion. He says they will do their part to ensure people receive quality health care and medical supplies on time.

“In the next two years, we want Parliament to pass two to three bills, including the Alcohol Bill, the Health Professionals Bill, and an amendment to the National Drug Authority Act,” Acuti added.

“My sincere gratitude to the Government Chiefwhip and the August House for retaining my position. I am truly humbled by the trust and confidence you have placed in me to continue serving in this critical role,” Tonny Ayoo said.

“I am committed to working tirelessly with my colleagues to ensure that our committee’s work aligns with the nation’s interests and benefits the people of Uganda.”
