Dr Eunice Apio starts her legislative duties Thursday

Kampala I Oyam North MP Elect Dr Eunice Apio Otuko will be sworn in on Thursday, July 20, 2023. Apio was elected to replace Col Rtd Okello Engola Macodwogo on July 6, beating three others.

She was declared the victor by Onoria Richard, the Returning Officer for Oyam District Electoral District with 15,718 votes. Okello Engola Samuel, son of the late MP, Macodwogo, obtained 15,161 votes.

The Oyam North by-election was UPC’s first win in a by-election since the 2021 general elections.

Fourteen days after she was elected, Dr Apio will officially be sworn in on Thursday to begin her Legislative duties for her electorates.

“This is to inform the membership and general public that the Member of Parliament (MP) elect for Oyam North Constituency Dr. Eunice Otuko Apio will be swearing in on Thursday 20th July 2023 at the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda,” UPC party spokesperson, Sharon Arach said.

She added: “That is when the Honourable will start officially to serve the people of Oyam North and the country at large as a Legislator.”

Speaking to the press on July 6 at Oyam district council hall, shortly after the declaration, Apio pledged to reach out to those she competed with in the emotionally contested by-election.

Dr Apio is the third female MP on a UPC ticket in Oyam district – joining Santa Alum (Woman MP) and Betty Amongi (Oyam South).
