UPDF Corporal who killed two in Western Uganda arrested

Fort Portal I A UPDF soldier who shot dead two of his colleagues in Fort Portal City on Friday morning has been arrested. 

His arrest was confirmed by Col Deo Akiiki, the Deputy Defense spokesperson Friday evening. 

Earlier, Col Akiiki said, “We received an incident report about one Cpl Avugo Lomuro of Mountain Division Signal Department attached to the Airforce Evacuation Component who shot and killed two colleagues.”

Avugo also injured the other. “As per UPDF policy of reporting to the family, the deceased names are not made public.

“The hunt is on for the soldier who is on the run. He will definitely be brought to the book to answer for his crimes. The UPDF condemns the act of the soldier in whatever circumstances,” he said in the morning.

“The killer criminal soldier has been arrested from Saka areas along Kagote – Kichwamba Road.

“He is now in our custody at Mountain Division headquarters – Muhoti, awaiting trial in the court-martial,” Akiiki updated a group of journalists – later in the day.

Gun violence has increased in Uganda in recent years – leading to the death of high-profile citizens in both government and the private sector.

In May 2023, at least eight people died in separate shootings in Kampala and surrounding areas over the past 14 days, Daily Monitor reported.

Those killed included former Oyam North MP and State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Col Rtd Okello Engola Macodwogo. on May 2 by his bodyguard, Private Wilson Sabiiti.

That month (May), at least six people were arrested as suspects after the shootings.
