Alebtong | Police in the North Kyoga Region are holding Ojuny Jimmy, 34, a teacher at Otoirio Nursery and Primary School in Alebtong district.
Okuny is a prime suspect in the murder of Ongom Denis, 25. He was killed by a mob after being accused of theft.
According to the police report, the deceased was a resident of Allela village, Omee parish, Amugu sub-county, Alebtong district.
North Kyoga Region Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on December 4, 2024, at Awelo Cell, Okum Ward, Amugu town council, Alebtong at around 5:00 am.
“It is alleged that Ongom was confronted early in the morning at Awelo Cell on suspicion of having two stolen chickens concealed in a sack,” Okema stated.
While locals interrogated him, another group began to assault him, according to the PRO. “He reportedly died from the injuries sustained during the attack.”
A case file has been opened at Alebtong Central Police Station. “Officers, led by the District Police Commander, went to the scene with the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), conducted investigations, and documented the incident.”
Sticks and other items thought to have been used in the assault were found and preserved as evidence, according to the PRO.
The alleged stolen chickens were also recovered, but the owner has yet to be identified.
The incident reportedly occurred at Ojuny’s home.
“Mob violence is on the rise in the region, and we strongly urge the public not to take the law into their own hands. Such acts of mob justice are prohibited and will not be tolerated,” Okema stated.
“If such incidents occur on or near your property, law enforcement may detain you as part of their investigation, based on the suspicion that you are facilitating or endorsing these activities.
