Lira University fits 6 labs with gas systems worth shs168m

Lira I Lira University says six laboratories have been fitted and filled with gas systems under Science and Technology Equipment Production Unit (STEPU).

The university spent shs168m on the equipment – the university’s senior communications officer – Patrick Opio said.

Opio said STEPU, a department at the national curriculum development centre (NCDC), installed gas systems in the labs at the departments of Biochemistry, Physiology, Physics; Biology, Pharmacology and Chemistry.

“The facilities were handed over to the University authority on 12th July 2023. Lira University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jaspher Ogwal Okeng lauded NCDC/STEPU for ensuring that the work produced meets the required standards.

“The labs will definitely foster teaching and learning process at Faculties of Medicine and Education-Basic Sciences,” Prof. Ogwal said.

Prof. Ogwal Okeng noted that the benefits of a science lab include giving students hands-on experience, formulate their own ideas and fostering curiosity.

“The laboratories will encourage creativity among our science and medical students, fostering self-directed learning and helping improve memory.

“Labs make students become more focused with better concentration levels,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor hailed the Contractor, NCDC, for beating the deadline of the contract agreement and doing a good job, urging the user departments to plan for maintenance of the labs in their respective annual budgets.
