Lira, April 24, 2023: The secretary for health and education of Apac district Sam Opira has said his life is in danger. He said unknown people are in a clandestine move to finish him off.

Journalist cum politician, Opira is also the councilor representing Chegere sub-county to Apac district council. He was over the news last week after he unearthed unethical behaviour by an anaesthetist from Apac General Hospital who is accused of extorting money from patients.

It is alleged that the suspect, Sabina Acen was charging patients up to shs200,000 for her services, a practice which is not allowed in a government facility.  In his media outburst, Opira suspects that he could have become a target because of his tough stance on corruption practices in the district.

Apac district is one of the most corrupt districts in Lango sub-region and several of her officers have been arrested and charged by the Anti-corruption court in Kampala.

Opira has opened a case of threatening violence at Apac Central Police Station vide reference number 17/21/04/2023 and Police have kicked off investigations to expose the yet-to-be-identified suspects.

Speaking to the media over the weekend, Sam Opira said he has gathered good intelligence that “some people are after me because they don’t like what I am doing to wipe out graft in the district.”

But Opira said that much as there are threats towards his life, he would continue to execute his duties in the district as an elected leader and a representative of the people.

Reacting on this issue, George Abdul, the Resident District Commissioner of Apac said it was unfortunate that some unscrupulous people would want to target with the intent to terminate a leader who is fighting for development and the social well-being of the community.

RDC warned the unknown individuals who are threatening Opira to back off because there is sophisticated security infrastructure to net them and have them face the long arm of the law.
