Road crash: What we know so far from MP Okabe’s death

It is a dark day for the people of Serere and the country as a whole following the shocking death of Patrick Okabe, the (now former) Serere MP, Eastern Uganda.

Okabe and his wife all died on Monday, December 19, 2022 after their car collided with an Isuzu box body truck.

Christine Okabe died on transportation to Mbale regional referral hospital for better management.

In a statement released on Monday, the spokesperson of the traffic police, Faridah Nampiima said “the cause of the accident has been attributed to the Isuzu box body driver who drifted from his side to the side of the Landcruiser”.

“The territorial police at Budaka has today 19th December 2022 at around 7 am, registered a fatal accident, at Naboa Town Council along the Mbale-Tirinyi Road, involving motor vehicle reg no UBK 995F, & Isuzu box body registration number KCX 071K, killing on spot..”

The truck driver is on the run, according to Nampiima.

The driver, only identified as Jacob, remains in critical condition at Mbale regional referral hospital, she added.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa said on the said news. “Extremely sad to comprehend the passing on of Hon. Patrick Okabe, MP Serere County.”

Tayebwa described Okabe as “a true voice of reason, an author, a passionate believer in the Almighty and Peace Maker”.

“Hon. Okabe has died at a time when we needed him most! Condolences to the family. Rest in Peace brother,” he added.
