The former Woman Member of Parliament for Lamwo district, Molly Lanyero, who is seeking a comeback in the 2026 general elections, has issued a strong call to the electorate to reject politicians who use money to buy votes.
Speaking during a community engagement in Palabek Kal town council on Thursday, Lanyero emphasized the need for voters to elect leaders based on merit, integrity, and a vision for development not on the size of their wallet.
“A politician who bribes you for a vote is not coming to serve, but to recover what they spent,” Lanyero said. “Let us stop trading our future for handouts. Leadership should be about service, not buying positions.”
She expressed concern over the rising trend of vote-buying, especially during campaign seasons in Lamwo, where voters are often enticed with alcohol, dance events, and cash.
Lanyero warned that such practices weaken democratic accountability and fuel corruption.
“Lamwo deserves leaders who stand for truth and justice. Bribery is not a leadership quality, it is a sign of failure. Let us break this cycle together,” she urged.
Lanyero, who served in Parliament from 2016 to 2021, said she is returning to politics with a renewed mission to promote good governance, education, and women empowerment in the district.
Her message resonated with many community members, including Rev. Emmanuel Okonya, a local religious leader who welcomed her call for clean politics.
“As a church, we stand for values. Politicians who come to buy votes are not coming to build our community. We support this message of integrity and service,” Rev. Okonya said.
As the 2026 elections approach, Lanyero’s message adds to the growing public discourse around electoral integrity in Northern Uganda, particularly in districts like Lamwo that have long battled poverty, marginalization, and post-conflict recovery.
