Karamoja – August 4, 2022: Karamoja sub-region has recorded thousands of deaths due to starvation with dozens of households unable to get what to eat.

Last week, over 800 deaths were recorded and leaders attributed it to the delay in paying SAGE to the elders.

In a letter seen by this digital publication, 226 deaths have been recorded in the five wards of Nabilatuk Town Council. In his letter dated July 20, 2022, to the Chief Administrative Officer of Nabilatuk district, Longolio John, the Town Clerk of Nabilatuk Town Council notified the CAO of “death as a result of famine”.

“This is to bring to your attention death occurrences in all the five [5] wards of Nabilatuk town council as results of lack of food due to the famine situation,” Longolio’s letter reads.

He notified the CAO that the data was submitted by the Principal Town Agents through the offices of the local council ones at the villages.

Forty-one [41] people died in Naupala ward, 61 from central ward; 78 from Arengesiep ward; 31 from Lolet ward and 15 from Natopojo ward.

“With the current situation at hand, we request the district disaster management committee to lobby for any support from donors to avert the starvation of the community,” Longolio appealed.

In mid-July 2022, the chairperson LC5 of Nabilatuk district Paul Lokol revealed that the district authorities had abandoned talking about the Parish Development Model (PDM) because of the hunger situation attacking the Karamoja sub-region.

Addressing the press Lokol disclosed that PDM is not “a priority discussion at this point”. Although registration is ongoing at households; Lokol says people think they are being registered for food relief.

He says PDM talk is halted as matters of hunger and insecurity dominate until the food is distributed to his people.

“Every morning I receive people at my home begging for food, even some you can’t believe and there’s a massive movement of people from villages to town seeking for what to eat,” the district chairperson added.

The government and the opposition political party, NuP last month dispatched relief food to Karamoja.
