Gulu 10, July 2021: We have decided to embark on training youth how to raise and manage tea nursery beds in the region in order to create employment opportunities, Edwin Atukunda Beekunda, the EFOTI director and a renowned tea expert says.
He says this is being done at this time when everyone is at home.
“We decided to concentrate on this massive training during the first lockdown and when corona became so serious in cities, we zeroed down in order to utilize the untapped wealth,” he continues.
At EFOTI, he says, “we believe in optimum utilization of all resources.”
“We moved down to villages because it is rear to get corona from the gardens,” he adds.
Speaking to TND News Friday, the EFOTI director said together with Nwoya district, NUSAF, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Latoro Community and other stakeholders, “we are organizing to officially launch the project on Monday.”
The event starts at 10:00am at Latoro community tea garden.
Nine days ago, EFOTI and McLeod Russell Uganda Limited signed a five year agreement, mandating EFOTI to supply standard tea green leaf to them on a daily basis.
With over 1,300 acres of green leaf now available, EFOTI is still mobilising people across Northern Uganda to embrace commercial tea farming inorder to meet the factory demand.
During the five year of partnership between EFOTI and McLeod Russell Uganda Limited, a number of households in the region is projected to be financially stable and able to meet their day to day domestic needs.
