Cattle compensation: President Secretary furious as conmen invade Teso

Soroti – September 23, 2021: The Private Secretary to the President in charge of political affairs, Dan Mulalu is angry with circulating reports that some unauthorized people have started moving in the community deceiving them on cattle compensation.

The furious secretary says they have gotten information that some suspected conmen have invaded Teso and are now soliciting money from the claimants in the name of confirming their names in the final lists.

He notes that the suspected conmen are asking for money ranging from fifty thousand. This, he has been told depends on the statuses of the claimants.

Mulalu has now asked the public to coordinate with the District and Gombola Internal Security Officers (DISOs & GISO), Residents District Commissioners (RDCs) and Local Councils Ones (LC1s) to help net out the suspects.

Mulalu, however, asks families whose claimants have passed on to sit and choose estate caretaker to avoid fights amongst family members at time of benefiting.

Peter Pex Paak, the Resident City Commissioner Soroti intimates that his office has equally received information that “some goons” accessed the list and contacts of the claimants and they are moving around calling victims and asking for money not less than 100,000 shillings.

Paak reveals that already security spies have been deployed to net the suspects, but also calls for vigilance from the public.

Paul Omer, the Mayor Soroti City East Division states that one of the old women hailing from Amuria district was conned shs360, 000 in the names of having her names in the final register.

He says the “gang stars” are “very smart and driving posh cars” and that nobody could doubt them as conmen.

The long awaited cattle compensation is expected next month, years after some claimants said they had lost hope.

This comes as government is said to have released UGX50 billion for the compensation of Teso war claimants who suffered during the insurgencies in the region.

According to records, Teso is having 33,664 war claimants that are currently being verified before the expected payment starts in October this year.

A joint team of RISOs, DISOs and RDCs are on the ground to conduct verification exercise that will see victims compensated.

The exercise is done using Data cards that will capture bio-data, National Identity Card, Letters of Administration (all details of the claimants).

The forms will be filled in three duplicates; one copy for the claimant, second to the district and third copy to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
