There Are No Jitters in the Economy. It Is Simply Transitioning From a Period of Extreme Liberalism and Indiscipline to One of Order – Says Gen Muhoozi

Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has dismissed concerns about possible instability in Uganda’s economy, insisting that the country is not experiencing economic jitters but is instead undergoing a transition towards greater order and discipline.

In a statement, Muhoozi argued that the current economic situation should not be interpreted as a sign of trouble. He said Uganda was moving away from what he described as a period of extreme liberalism and indiscipline towards a more organised economic environment.

“There are no jitters in the economy. It is simply transitioning from a period of extreme liberalism and indiscipline, where speculators and conmen robbed Ugandans of trillions of shillings, to one of order,” Muhoozi stated.

His remarks suggest that he believes some of the economic challenges facing the country are linked to practices that allowed dishonest individuals and speculators to exploit Ugandans. However, he did not identify the people or businesses he was referring to or provide details of the alleged losses.

The statement comes amid public discussions about the cost of living, business conditions, financial discipline and the general direction of Uganda’s economy. Muhoozi’s comments present his view that the country is undergoing an important change in how economic activities are managed.

His criticism of extreme liberalism also raises questions about the kind of economic environment he believes Uganda should embrace. Although he did not outline specific policies or reforms, his reference to order suggests support for stronger discipline and accountability in economic activities.

The remarks are likely to attract debate among businesspeople, investors and ordinary Ugandans, especially those interested in how government decisions affect markets, access to credit and the cost of doing business. Questions may also emerge about how the transition will affect private businesses and economic freedom.

For now, Muhoozi maintains that Uganda’s economy is not experiencing jitters but is moving towards a period of order. His statement has placed the country’s economic direction back in the spotlight, with further details needed about the reforms and measures expected to deliver the changes he has described.
